Workshops & Consultations

Raising Race Conscious Children’s next workshop series will take place on Sunday, October 20th at 8 PM, EST (and Follow-Up Workshop on October 27th at 8 PM, EST).

Note: Workshop registration may close 48 hours prior to the workshop.

We often avoid talking about race with our young children but research has shown that children notice similarities and differences between people. When we are silent, they are left to draw their own conclusions about what “different” means. Without coaching or support, their conclusions often reflect and reinforce biases. Fortunately – when we are intentional – we can impact the ways that our children see, categorize, and make meaning about race.

In the introductory 1.5 hour-long workshop/webinar, you will:

  • Develop confidence to talk about race with young children
  • Practice various strategies to proactively talk about race with young children.
  • Strengthen children’s ability to become a change-maker.

The follow-up workshop, also 1.5 hours, will focus on specific scenarios (to be submitted by participants). Participants will practice race conscious strategies from the introductory workshop and participants will receive structured and supportive feedback on various questions/scenarios.

The intro and follow-up workshops are always take place from 8-9:30 PM EST on consecutive Sunday evenings (upcoming dates indicated above).

Please Note: Pre-workshop readings and Zoom link will be sent (to the email used to register via Stripe) one week prior to the workshop.

Testimonial from past participant:

Raising Race Conscious Children presented at our school last night and parents here are talking about all the rich and thoughtful material shared.  The workshop was thorough, organized –an engaging and rewarding  blend of information and “turn and talk” interaction. The delivery was warm, friendly and also passionate, exhibiting a clear investment and commitment to this work. By the time it was over parents felt enlightened, supported, and eager to learn more about this important subject matter.

Facilitator:

Sachi Feris is a blogger and workshop facilitator at Raising Race Conscious Children, an online a resource to support adults who are trying to talk about race with young children. She also taught Spanish in elementary schools for twenty years in New York City. Sachi identifies as White and is a mother to her three children, born in 2012, 2015, and 2017.

Writing for your Children: Storytelling to support racial identity development (a four-part series)

In this new, four-part workshop series, Writing for your children: Storytelling to support racial identity development, participants will:

  • reflect on their own/their child(ren)’s racial identities (birth-teens)
  • embrace the power of writing and storytelling to teach your child(ren) about themselves and others
  • Write and practice telling (up to) three concrete stories to be shared with your child(ren)

Inspired by the racial identity development models developed by Dr. William Cross and Dr. Janet Helms, research on family narratives by Dr. Robyn Fivush, and storytelling models from Showing Up for Racial Justice NYC Calling In Workshop, this workshop series draws on writing practices by New York Writer’s Coalition (NYWC) and Lynda Barry, and supports participants through an experience that will help them share their own stories with their children, and make connections to a larger conversation around action for racial justice.

Sessions will meet on via Zoom on dates/times designated by your group.  Workshops are highly interactive/participatory and space is limited. Please come with a pencil and paper and be ready to write! Sharing your stories is voluntary but encouraged.

Workshops will be facilitated by Sachi Feris. While Raising Race Conscious Children’s workshops are open to all and strategies/prompts will be inclusive of all, this workshop may be more relevant for people who identify as White.

Please note: Previous participation in Raising Race Conscious Children’s Introductory workshop series is encouraged but not required.

Please message via Facebook or email to inquire as to next steps for scheduling a workshop for your group.

Additional workshops/consultations:

Virtual/In-person workshops:

Bring our interactive workshops to your school or community! Both the In-person and Virtual workshop build on our interactive webinar content.

In-person workshops typically have longer time frames (2-3 hours+) and delve more deeply into the exploration of scenarios regarding race and young children.

The Virtual workshop uses a webcam platform to communicate directly with your group and collaborate with an on-the-ground facilitator at your workshop’s location.

In-person and Virtual workshops are tailored to the specific needs of your group. Both the In-person and Virtual workshops include one-hour of planning time prior to the workshop, as well as an additional hour of debriefing following the workshop.

For more information about bringing Raising Race Conscious Children to your parent group, school, or organization for an in-person or virtual workshop, please email:
